The Bariatric Program at Norton King’s Daughters’ Health is designed to improve the overall health of anyone who could benefit from weight loss surgery. Unhealthy weight is a significant risk factor for many health conditions – including heart disease and diabetes. When appropriate, bariatric surgery can help patients begin a lifelong journey toward improved health.

Common Questions about Bariatrics

How do I know if I am an appropriate candidate?
Most candidates for weight loss surgery have a BMI (Body Mass Index) of 40 or more. When certain health conditions are met, patients may qualify with a BMI of 35. It is common for patients to have underlying medical conditions associated with an unhealthy weight. These conditions may include diabetes, high blood pressure, arthritis, asthma and sleep apnea. Every patient is thoroughly evaluated by Dr. Schumacher to determine if he/she is an appropriate candidate for bariatric surgery.

Will I have to eat differently after surgery?
For optimal success, weight-loss surgery should be viewed as a lifelong commitment. Proper nutrition, portion control, and regular exercise are important components of everyday life following surgery. Our team will provide you with tools and resources to help you succeed. Bariatric patients should think of surgery as the beginning of a journey toward better health, not the ending.

How much does bariatric surgery cost?
Every candidate for bariatric surgery at KDH meets with a financial advisor prior to making a decision about surgery. The financial advisor reviews your insurance coverage and works with your insurance provider to determine eligibility and out-of-pocket costs. Costs may be different for every patient. We encourage you to be fully informed about your care. If you have questions, please ask.

How do I begin the process?
Referrals are not required, but we do we encourage candidates to speak with their personal care provider about the potential benefits of weight-loss surgery. Once ready to proceed, candidates are asked to participate in a Bariatric Surgery Seminar provided by Dr. David Schumacher. Call (812) 801-0840.
